Chapter 8

Tony and I headed toward town the following morning. I had the feeling that now that the cat was out of the bag regarding my prenatal state, word would get out, and I really did have a handful of people I wanted to tell myself. Our first stop was the animal shelter, where Aspen, who hadn’t been there when Tony and I had stopped by yesterday to give Brady the great news about the fireworks show, ran up and hugged me.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

I knew she was referring to the fact that Tony and I had managed to avoid a near catastrophe should the fireworks show have been held near the animal shelter as had been the plan.

“Anything for the animals,” I said, hugging her tightly.

She must have felt the bump since she stepped back and looked at my stomach.

“Yes,” I said. “Tony and I are expecting, which is why we’re here. We wanted to tell you personally before someone else spilled the beans.”

“Oh my gosh, Tess!” She hugged me again. “I’m so happy for you.” She glanced at Tony. “Both of you. When did you find out?”

“While we were in Ashton Falls, actually. I know we’ve been back for a few weeks, and I could have mentioned it at any point, but I wanted to tell my mother first, which I procrastinated doing. We finally told her last night, so here we are telling you.”

“I’m honored and thrilled to be one of your first. Does Zoe know?”

“She does. She was there when we found out. I asked her not to say anything, and she promised not to.”

“Wow.” She hugged her arms around her waist. “I’m so excited. When are you due?”

“December.”

“A Christmas baby. You must be so excited.”

I glanced at Tony and smiled. “We really are.”

“Do you know if you’re having a boy or a girl?”

“Not yet. I have a doctor’s appointment tomorrow. We plan to find out then.”

Tony and I chatted with Aspen for a few more minutes, and then we headed toward the hardware and home supply store to talk to Hap. We figured we’d share our news with him and then head directly to Hattie’s bakeshop to fill her in before anyone beat us to it. As expected, both Hap and Hattie were thrilled with our news, and as expected, both wanted to be kept in the loop with respect to the gender reveal. Hattie asked if we planned to have a party to reveal the gender of our child to our friends and family, to which we replied that, given the party we were hosting on July fourth, we didn’t want to plan an additional party. But I promised that we would be sure to stop by and let her know how our doctor’s appointment went once we told Mom and Bree, who would disown us if we didn’t tell them first.

“Lunch?” Tony asked after we’d spoken to those we felt we needed to share our secret with.

“Lunch sounds good, and even
